How the consumables fit together
A ceramic decal passes through several materials before it reaches the kiln, and each one influences the final result.
Decal paper carries the printed image. The covercoat, applied as lamination paper, liquid covercoat, spray coating or already integrated into precoated paper, keeps the decal together during the water transfer and burns away during firing.Inside the printer, the developer transports the ceramic toner to the imaging system and has a major influence on print density and consistency.Using consumables that are tested and matched to each other helps eliminate one of the most common causes of printing and firing problems.
Choosing a decal paper
INEQS ceramic decal paper comes in three grades: Fotocal G at 150 gsm, Trucal Plus at 170 gsm and Incal at 160 gsm, from A4 up to SRA3 and oversize sheets. If you would rather skip the coating step, precoated decal paper carries its cover coat from the factory.
Choosing a coating method
- A few decals at a time: coating spray, lacquer or flux, with no screen to prepare and clean
- Small and medium runs: liquid cover coat by brush, roller or dip
- Regular production with little operator influence: lamination paper on a hot laminator
- Medium and high volumes at the lowest cost per decal: screen printed covercoat, see equipment
Remember the one fixed rule: unfluxed toner always needs a fluxed coating before firing. Fluxed toner can take lacquer only. Keep paper and developer stock in the printer room, and order developer for your exact printer model.
