How digital ceramic printing works

Four steps from a digital file to a permanently fired image. Ceramic pigments create the colour, and the kiln permanently bonds the decoration to the surface.

1

Print

Design in any software, then print onto waterslide decal paper on an INEQS-converted laser printer loaded with ceramic toner.

2

Coat

A covercoat or laminate is applied over the print. It holds the image together while it moves from paper to surface.

3

Apply

Soak the decal, slide it onto tile, porcelain, enamel or glass, then use a squeegee to remove the water and air bubbles. The process is easy to learn with the right training.

4

Fire

Fire at 540 to 1,200 °C depending on substrate and toner. The pigment melts into the glaze and becomes part of the surface.

  • Fluxed sets enamel and low-fire ceramics at 800° to 900°C
  • Glass toner in black and white and a fluxed red set for float and borosilicate glass. Fired from 540° to 630°C.

Why toner, not ink

Ceramic toner is a dry pigment, so it never clogs or dries out in the printhead and delivers near-lithographic detail when used in a digital ceramic laser printer. With INEQS ceramic toners, suitable substrates and the correct firing conditions, fired results are dishwasher safe, food safe and UV stable for many decades.
