Coating Spray for Ceramic Decals

Aerosol covercoat for ceramic decals. For samples and short runs, with no screen to prepare or clean.

INEQS Coating Sprays provide a fast and convenient alternative to screen-printing cover coats and flux coatings onto ceramic decals.

They are particularly useful for small production runs, sample production or occasional jobs where preparing and cleaning a screen-printing frame would be time-consuming and inefficient.

Lacquer spray or flux spray?

The toner family decides. Fluxed toner can be coated with lacquer spray only: the lacquer burns out completely in the kiln and leaves no visible decal edge, with a slightly softer shine. Unfluxed toner always needs flux spray, because the flux is what fuses the pigment into the glaze. Flux gives a glossy finish, and the decal edge can show after firing; cover the whole decoration area or align the decal with an edge of the ware to avoid it.

How to spray an even coat

  • Work in a well ventilated area, away from the kiln and the printer
  • Lay the printed sheet flat and let the toner settle before coating
  • Build the coat in several light, even passes rather than one heavy one
  • Cover the whole printed area with a small margin, then let it dry fully before soaking

A coat that is too thin tears when the decal is soaked; one that is too heavy takes longer to burn out. Test on one sheet when you open a new can.

When to move on from spray

Spray is ideal for one to two prints a day, samples and test firings. Once you coat decals every day, lamination or screen printing costs less per decal and gives a more repeatable layer. See coating equipment.
